Hare Trail blazing!

One of the hare sculptures painted by Swillustrator Jane Veveris Callan, will be blazing the trail for the Cirencester Hare Festival tomorrow. Her 5ft tall 'Harelequin' character design will be making an appearance on BBC Points West at 6.30pm on Friday 28th Feb, in a feature about the Festival and public art trail.

Harelequin was inspired by an Old English character, his name reflects the playful nature of the harlequin and of the hare, also often depicted in folk law as a trickster. Originating in the Italian 'Commedia dell'art'e', the harlequin became hugely popular in England from the 18th Century onwards in 'Harlequinade' mime productions. He was cheeky and nimble...forever outwitting the father of his sweetheart Columbine.

Harelequin is sponsored by and will be situated at Ingleside House, 5 Beeches Rd, Cirencester from 29th March until the end of August.2014.

Gromits Unleashed - update - Promotional videos

Icon Films
ACADAMY AWARD®-WINNING STAR TO PROMOTE BRISTOL IN ONLINE FILM SERIES
Slapstick video sketches, Instagram images and Facebook campaign invite viewers to visit Bristol
www.VisitBristol.co.uk/gromit#GromitUnleashed

A series of online films featuring one of the world’s best-loved animated characters, Gromit, was commissioned by Destination Bristol, the film stars a five-foot sculpture of Gromit, one of 80 making up a major new public art trail called Gromit Unleashed, organised by Aardman Animations with charity partner The Grand Appeal.

A high proportion of the Gromits on the trail, set to hit the streets of Bristol this summer, is being designed by celebrities and well-known artists including illustrator Raymond Briggs, comedian Harry Hill and designer Sir Paul Smith.   Some are designed by local artists eg Paula Bowles (former SW Illustrator) & Dave Bain.

Produced by Bristol-based Icon Films, the main film stars two hapless delivery men, failing to navigate their way around Bristol to deliver one of the giant Gromit sculptures to an unknown destination. In a nod to the animated Gromit, the film is silent and its human characters communicate only through facial expressions, actions and body language.

Icon Films
Kelly Ballard, Head of Marketing at Destination Bristol, says: “Having the world’s first Gromit trail is a fantastic coup for Bristol.  Gromit is one of many Bristol icons and is much-loved among global audiences, so we wanted to create a film using him to showcase the city’s great landmarks and destinations.

“The aim is to inspire people from across the UK and beyond to come and sample the city’s heritage, attractions and creative vibe. Gromit Unleashed forms a key element of Destination Bristol’s 2013 marketing campaigns which are part of a three-year tourism marketing investment project led by Visit England and funded by the Government’s Regional Growth Fund.”

The film is supported by three one-act comedy sketches, showcasing some of Bristol’s landmark locations and characters, to be posted on Facebook weekly from 30 May and throughout June.  In one of the teasers Gromit makes a Jurassic Park-style arrival in Clifton, in another he is chased around Millennium Square by ice cream-wielding kids.

Cris Warren at Icon Films, who wrote and directed the films, said: “They are a cheeky salute to the slapstick of Eric Sykes and Harold Lloyd.  The stars – Bristolians John and Geoff – appear in a series of surreal situations that see a giant Gromit appear at Bristol landmarks.  It’s a true Bristol production.  Almost the entire crew and cast of the films are Bristol born and bred.  Our brief was to promote Bristol as a destination and Gromit Unleashed showcases how Bristol is a rewarding place to get hopelessly lost in.”

The film’s soundtrack, created exclusively for Gromit Unleashed by Bristol dance floor legends Boca 45, is entitled Lafayette Party Time, and will be available to download this summer.

The films are complemented by a schedule of online and outdoor marketing executions that build up to the opening of Gromit Unleashed. A Facebook and YouTube marketing campaign will target couples and families located more than a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Bristol.

Mark Terry-Lush at Renegade Media, which created the social media, seeding and online advertising campaign linked to the films, added: “The film uses gentle humour to tell a story about Bristol.  The wider campaign around the core films will include extra content like outtakes from filming, CCTV footage, screen grabs, and Instagram images, all seeded across various platforms helping to create a buzz about Bristol across all media and social channels.”

All video and creative will be live on Visit Bristol’s Facebook page, from where it will be amplified via Twitter #GromitUnleashed and #VisitBristol.

For further information, images and previews of the films contact Sarah Chidgey on  07805 034 477  or Mark Terry-Lush on 07740 432112 or  01452 760147 .

Swans of Wells, and the Wreck of the Valentine

Once again, my bloggage is all about 3D stuff rather than illustrations, but hey ho...

First up is the new sculpture trail in Wells, where there are currently about 60 giant Swans dotted around the city. The first of them that I was involved with is "Up Before The Beak," which was designed and painted by James Long. As he didn't have any experience with creating the fibreglass additions needed for the design, I was asked to add the judge's wig and half-moon spectacles .

Despite the fibreglass looking like stewed rhubarb when it goes on, you can build texture into it pretty well. The specs were made from aluminium tile trim cut and shaped down, with perspex lenses.

... and here he is in situ after James had painted him:

My own design for a Swan was partly inspired by my 2 son's fondness for all things scaly and terrifying, and partly because I couldn't really see a way to do a naturalistic conversion job on a swan without once again getting through a few buckets of fibreglass. Which I duly did, and The Swanster... Doyouthinkhesawus? emerged from the workshop after a couple of  weeks of intense work. I bought some Crocodile eyes from www.glasseyes.com, which I think set him off rather nicely.

The next project was a real adventure- I was asked by Amberly Valentine (Young Fashion Photographer of the Year 2010) to create a 30 foot long shipwreck for a photoshoot at Gunwalloe Cove, Cornwall. This is the original design that I was given to work from:

As I didn't have a huge amount of time to produce it, I had to employ an assistant for this task (whom I shall hereafter refer to as Able Seaman Dad...) to help with the rigging and internal construction of the masts, the largest of which was 25 feet tall. The masts were made from cardboard tubes from a carpet warehouse strengthened with wood, and the booms were made from cardboard tubes from a fabric shop.

The ribs and planking of the ship were made with flexible plywood, painted to look 3D. Able Seaman Dad and I hired a van to drive it all down to the coast in the lashing rain. The rain stopped as we pulled up into the car park, and held off for the next 2 hours while we put it up, starting with 3 fence posts piledrivered in to the sand to anchor the masts.

... and then the rain and mist rolled back in. Amberly was delighted, as it fitted the mood of the pictures perfectly, but the 4 models (who appeared to be wearing about 3 gauzy handkerchiefs and a tutu between them) didn't seem quite as thrilled with the inclement conditions. Able Seaman Dad proved invaluable by fixing the generator for the lights, re-wiring the underwater lights for the next day, and lending Amberly a powerful torch to 'feather' the model when the lights that her team had brought with them failed. When we finally wrapped, the wreck was so sodden from the rain that two of the booms had buckled, which again fitted the images well, and it only took about 2 minutes to pull the whole thing to pieces.

The final shots will be part of Amberly's "Arcadia" project, which will involve an exhibition in London and an accompanying book.

Here's the wreck just as we finished it, with a couple of Amberly's props crew in it for scale:

And here's my portfolio shot, with the hotel from the headland removed:

Well, that's all for now!
