Illustration of Momo

Swillustrator Kate Davies recently completed a beautiful illustration of Momo for the community project 'Living Room' in South Wales. Kate based her Momo on a young friend of hers.

'Momo' was written by the German children's author and fantasy writer Michael Ende.
At the edge of the city, in the ruins of an old amphitheatre, there lives a homeless girl called Momo.
Momo has a special talent which she uses to help all her friends who come to visit her. Then one day the sinister men in grey arrive and silently take over the city. Only Momo has the power to resist them, and with the help from Professor Hora and his strange tortoise, Cassiopeia, she travels beyond the boundaries of time to undercover their dark secrets.

Year of the Bus sculpture trails

The Year of the Bus sculpture trails organised by Wild in Art, Transport for London and the London Transport Museum to celebrate 60 years of the Routemaster bus, have entertained thousands of 'bus spotters' in the capital over the winter months.

There are a few days left to enjoy following the 4 trails around different parts of London, before they leave the streets on 11th January . All 60 will then be on display together at the Queen Elizabeth Park on the 24th / 25th January in a weekend of fun activities.

The sculptures will be auctioned on 3rd February, with proceeds supporting the charities Kids Aid, Transaid and the London Transport Museum. Bidding has started online at
http://www.i-bidder.com/yearofthebus

SWillustrator Jane Veveris Callan created the 'brollybus' design for the River Trail, which is situated opposite Tate Modern by the Millennium Bridge on the Southbank. It was inspired by the iconic London Transport posters of the past that feature umbrellas.

Hare and Seek Trail for the Cirencester Hare Festival

The Cirencester Hare Festival is proving very popular, with hare spotters of all ages enjoying tracking down the 50 giant hares in Cirencester and close surrounding villages. The individually designed 'fantasy' hares will  be auctioned to raise money for the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust's 'Green hare walkway' by the River Churn.

SWillustrator Jane Veveris Callan has painted 3 of the small life size hares which will join the 'Hare and Seek' Trail. A small version of the large 'Harebelle' which is sponsored by and situated at the Twelve Bells on Lewis Lane.  'Party Hare' who's black body is a magnetic blackboard where celebratory notes and messages can be placed and 'Panthare tigris' based on the Tiger hare concept of BBC 'Springwatch' presenter Chris Packham.

The third Red Hare day on 27th June will see the launch of a mini 'Hare and Seek' trail in the town.
This will be great fun for hare-spotters! From 24th of May until 27th of June small decorated hares will be hidden inside Cirencester shops, cafes and offices open to the public. You will need to collect a ‘Hare and Seek passport’ from the Visitor Information Centre or Information Point at the Town Council Offices in Binhgam House. This passport  will be available from the 27th of June once all the small hares have gone into hiding!. Then you can set out to find them all. Your passport will be stamped by the retailer each time you successfully locate a small hare. Enter your accurately stamped passport into the prize draw!  The ‘Hare and Seek’ trail will end on September 14th and the result of the prize draw will be announced on September 30th.

Cirencester Hare Festival

The Cirencester Hare Festival was launched at the end of March and is proving hugely popular. There are now over 25 large hares out in Cirencester and the surroundings, with more joining them every week. The event is helping raise awareness of local wildlife and the sculptures will be auctioned in October to raise money for the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust who aim to build a wild walkway around the river Churn.

A Trail map of venues displaying hares is available locally or downloadable from the Cirencester Hare Festival website. At the end of May there will be an additional 'Hare and Seek' display of smaller life size decorated hares in shops and businesses around the town.

There is a feature about the project and some of the hare designs in this month's Cirencester Life magazine which includes two by Swillustrator Jane Veveris Callan. One of her hares 'Harebelle' is in the spotlight on the front cover of the magazine
.

The Victorian Automaton

So, once again in my ceaseless veering away from actual illustrating, I'm going to tell you all about a recent project of mine for the Museum of Oxford: creating a solid oak Victorian style donation box, with an automaton in it that moves when the money is inserted.

I'll be honest, when I was originally contacted by the Council to design this piece, I didn't have a clue how to make automata (I'm still a bit sketchy now), but I took it on anyway because it sounded like fun. The brief was deceptively simple: the donation box had to look like a Victorian display cabinet, with the scene inside it based around the civil engineer William White, who designed much of the plumbing in Oxford, quite a few of the buildings, and the first ever Ladies Only bathing facility. They also wanted a vaguely steampunk feel to the whole thing, which is always fun to do.

So, having agreed to the project, I needed help (clearly), and after an exhaustive couple of minutes internet research, found an amazing designer of automata named Matt Smith (www.fourteenballstoy.co.uk) who lives in Cornwall. Matt very kindly put together the electrics that I needed for the motor, and designed the linkage system to make the figure of William White stand up and doff his stovepipe hat when the money goes in.

My friend Laurence happened to have a pretty much perfect cabinet in his shed that he had made to hold a maquette of one of his sculpture projects (www.laurencetindall.co.uk); he was going to use it for firewood, but he gave to me instead.  The bottom part of the cabinet I had made by Hawker Joinery (www.hawker-joinery.co.uk) to house the mechanism and the money collecting box and join seamlessly with Laurence's piece. All of this brilliant help meant that I could concentrate on the model making, which is definitely the fun bit.

I made the figure of William sitting at his desk, working on the signage for the Ladies Bathing facility; the Museum kindly gave me some scans of his actual plans, which I was able to reproduce to scale and put on his desk. The only thing I tweaked about him was to make his frankly splendid 'tache a little more smiley that in the photo that I was given of him. The shelves on the wall behind him have books with Oxford based titles on them (some highly anachronistic, like the History of Radiohead and the Haynes Morris Manual...), bad puns on bottles of wine and small jars of Henry Cooper's Oxford Marmalade; the wall beside him has a somewhat Heath Robinson-esque snarl of copper pipes, and a signed pin-up of Sarah Cooper that is reproduced from an original Frank Cooper's marmalade ad of the time. I even got to design and print my own Victorian inspired wallpaper design!

We installed the cabinet in the Museum at the beginning of May; if you are ever in Oxford, do pop into the Town Hall and say hello to him. Matt's original advice to me when I asked him about making automata was "Don't start! It'll take over your life...". Well, that hasn't happened so far, but I can see what he means: there is something incredibly satisfying and, yes, a little addictive about watching a model that you've made springing into life. I have a feeling this won't be my last automaton.

Cheers for reading!
